Cotton-Buds

1.  What Are Cotton Buds?

Cotton buds (you might call them cotton swabs or Q-tips) are just little sticks with cotton on the ends. They're useful for all sorts of things, from personal care to cleaning.

2. What They're Made Of

*   **Stick:**

    *   *Plastic:* The usual kind. They bend a bit, don't rot.
    *   *Paper/Cardboard:* Better for the planet, breaks down naturally, and they are strong enough to do the job.
    *   *Wood:* Sometimes used if you need something really stiff and want to be nice to the environment.
*   **Cotton Tips:**

    *   *Normal Cotton:* Soft, soaks stuff up, and rots away.
    *   *Fake Cotton:* Not as common, but you might see it used for some jobs.

*   **Extras:**
    *Some have tips that are packed down tight for little jobs.
    *Some are made softer or thirstier...

3. What You Can Do With Them

*   **Personal Stuff**

    *   Cleaning your outer ear (but don't shove them way inside!)
    *   Putting on or taking off makeup(like eyeliner).
    *   Wiping around your eyes or nose.
*   **First Aid**

    *   Putting on creams or cleaning cuts.
    *   Cleaning up little boo-boos.
*   **Around the House**

    *   Dusting your stuff.
    *   Touching up paint.
    *   Getting into tight spots when cleaning.

4. A Few Things to Keep in Mind

*   **Ears:** Don't stick them super far in your ears, you can hurt yourself.
*   **Kids:** Keep them away from little kids, they could choke.
*   **Flushing:** Don't flush them down the toilet, they can clog things up.

5. Different Kinds

*   **Regular:** Cotton on both ends, does almost everything.
*   **Pointy:** Good for makeup or medicine.
*   **Earth-Friendly:** Made from paper or wood.
*   **Pre-treated:** Soaked in stuff for cleaning cuts.
*   **Two-sided:** Soft on one end, firm on the other.

6. Think About the Planet

*   Plastic sticks hang around forever and end up as tiny bits of plastic in the water, etc.
*   The kind that rots away are better.
*   Some can even be composted.

7. How to Keep Them

*   Keep them dry and clean.
*   Don't leave them somewhere wet, or they'll get gross.
*   Keep them in a container.

8. What to Look For When Buying

*   What you need them for.
*   What the stick is made of (plastic or not).
*   What the tips are shaped like.
*   How many you need.
*   How they are packaged.

9. Other Options

*   Silicone swabs. You can wash and use them again.
*   A soft cloth for makeup or ear cleaning.
*   Ear cleaning kits.
